Services

Teaching is complex. One person doesn’t have all the answers to address all of a child’s diverse needs. Let’s work together to create effective supports for children to learn.

Services Provided

For Teachers

I offer coaching, consultations, and situated professional development so that recommended instructional techniques are individualized for the educator’s personal style of teaching and for student needs in the classroom.

I especially like to help educators teach students, who perform below grade-level expectations, make advances in the general education classroom.

For schools, I can create customized research-based professional development for school-wide staff or groups of teachers about inclusive practices, family-professional partnerships, Multi-Tiered Systems of Supports (MTSS), gradual release of responsibility, differentiation, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), behavior management, systems of prompts, or online teaching.

Since one-time professional workshops have limited efficacy, I recommend allowing me to follow up with teachers at your school using one-on-one coaching and consultations so that the new teaching strategies are implemented effectively in the classroom.

For Parents

I can help parents plan for meetings at school, such as for IEPs, 504 Plans, or parent-teacher conferences, and attend a meeting with a parent at school, if desired. I also can conduct school observations, and consult with parents about strategies to support their child at home.

Types of consultation services for parents can be related to improving a child’s academic, social-emotional, or communication skills, as well as relationships with siblings, daily routines, or homework completion.

For Children

I create customized lessons that incorporate a child’s strengths, interests, and needs. Lessons incorporate toys, music, and favorite fictional characters to help children learn to read, write, or do math. I make my sessions with children as stress-free as possible because learning is most effective when children are feeling relaxed, safe, and in a supportive environment.
My teaching focuses on a child’s current skills and I scaffold instruction based on the child’s functional needs and grade-level expectations. My intention is not to work with children in isolation. To teach a child well, I team with the family and any other professionals involved in the child’s learning. I assess children’s abilities informally in every session and embed formal assessment information into my lesson planning that the child may have had through one’s school or with other educational professionals.

Common Questions

Typically, consultation meetings are about 1 – 1.5 hours, and include a report with recommendations after each session. Direct instruction with a child is usually 1 hour with breaks integrated into the session as needed.

The number of sessions is flexible for each situation. Families can do a monthly consultation, twice a month, or on an as needed basis. It is recommended that a follow-up session be scheduled after a first consultation so that I can answer questions or modify any of the recommendations after implementation, if necessary.

Direct instruction sessions with children are usually scheduled once a week at the same day and time for consistency. I communicate with parents regularly so that we can partner on content in lessons and recommendations.

When working with teachers, I can prepare a professional development session for school staff or a group of teachers that is customized for their needs. Since a one-time workshop or professional development training is not usually effective in itself, I recommend that additional hours be scheduled for me to coach and support teachers individually to help them embed the research-based strategies into their teaching.

Lessons are individualized and based on strengths and challenges for each child. I take a lot of time to incorporate the child’s school curriculum and own interests into my lessons. I have made games and stories about popular TV shows, hobbies, or based on a child’s own life experiences, so that the teaching is meaningful for the child. In a 1-hour session, I alternate types of activities and add breaks so that the child is continuously engaged while learning.

I teach children or do family consultations in person or online. If you live in the San Antonio area, I can teach in your home, where the child is most comfortable and if feasible for your family. I work with each client to find the best setting to meet his or her needs.

Professional development for educators can also be conducted on site or online.
